Throughout history men have worn chaps. These are men that loved living life on the edge with adventure and gusto. Since the early 1900's, men who lived life in this way were the ones who chose to see the world from the back of a motorcycle.
Today mens motorcycle chaps give a man a rugged look that is also functional giving them the protection they deserve while riding out on the open road. First, where did chaps come from? The word chaps come from the word chaperajos. In pre-1700 the Spaniards riding through the thickets and brush in Mexico came up with a way to protect their legs. They took two pieces of flat leather and attached them to each side of their saddle. When they were riding through the brush and the thickets they would take these leather pieces and wrap them around their legs, protecting them. They called them chaperajos.
Likewise today mens motorcycle chaps have been synonymous with motorcycle riding because of the protection they give and the look they create. When wearing a pair of leather chaps, a rider stays warmer because their body heat is trapped in between them and the leather. Chaps also protect the rider's legs from flying rocks and other debris that may be out on the road. Cowhide and buffalo are both very durable and abrasive resistant. Wearing a pair of chaps made from cowhide and buffalo puts a protective abrasive resistant layer between the asphalt and the rider's skin. No rider likes to think about the possibility of having to lay their bike down, but if they do, wearing protective clothing creates an outcome that is much better than if they were not.
Mens motorcycle chaps come in a variety of leather types and grades, with many features to choose between. There are chaps to fit every riding style. Leather chaps are typically made of different grades of cowhide and buffalo. Again this is because of the durability and protective nature of these types of leather. As far as the features, there are chaps with lining, braiding, adjustable belt at the waist, pockets of different shapes and sizes, snaps at the bottom of the leg, zip-out lining, fringe, and more. Chaps are an important piece of protective clothing for every man who rides a motorcycle.
Other pieces of protective gear that every rider should wear are a motorcycle helmet, leather motorcycle jacket, gloves, and a good pair of boot type shoes. The helmet protects the head and brain. Really wearing a helmet is using the brain, to protect the brain. A leather motorcycle jacket gives a rider the protection he deserves against weather, cold, heat of the sun, wind and rain, abrasion, and road debris. Leather gloves protect the hands from the cold, but most importantly they protect the hands from abrasion. The natural instinct of everyone is to catch themselves from falling with their hands. The palms of the hands are more fully protected from the asphalt with leather gloves on. Wearing boot type shoes that come up over the ankle protects against getting burned. The soles should be grippy. This makes it easier to stand with the bike at rest. Wearing shoes with slippery soles makes this much harder.
There is nothing like riding a motorcycle out on the open road. Every rider deserves to have the ride of their life when they are riding. Wearing leather protective gear like chaps gives a rider peace of mind, freeing them to be in the moment enjoying every turn of the road being one with the surroundings and one their bike.
